Place the small portable base unit in an area you want to keep your pet away from. This will create an off limits zone of a 6-10 foot area. If your pet comes into that zone, the base unit sends a signal to the transmitter on their collar. The transmitter emits a tone at a frequency that only your pet will hear to warn them to stay away! Repeated events will eventually train your pet to avoid that area all together.
