Now you can count on Safety Central your online safety and preparedness store and complete resource for flood protection and hurricane safety supplies. Sandbags, when properly filled and placed, will redirect storm and debris flows away from property improvements.

How do I use sandbags?

Sandbags alone should not be relied on to keep water outside a building. Use baffle boards (plywood sheeting) or sheets of plastic tarp with sandbags. To form a sandbag wall, place bags tightly against one another to form the first layer of defense. Stagger the second and subsequent layers of bags, much like the pattern of bricks in a wall.

Sandbags should never be used to build a fortress around the perimeter of one's property. Doing so can actually trap floodwaters between sandbag walls and structures, leading to further damage.

The use of sandbags is a simple, but effective way to prevent or reduce flood water damage. Properly filled and placed sandbags can act as a barrier to divert moving water around, instead of through, buildings. Sandbag construction does not guarantee a water-tight seal, but is satisfactory for use in most situations. Sandbags are also used successfully to prevent overtopping of streams with levees, and for training current flows to specific areas.

Untied sandbags are recommended for most situations. Tied sandbags should be used only for special situations when pre-filling and stockpiling may be required, or for specific purposes such as filling holes, holding objects in position, or to form barriers backed by supportive planks. Tied sandbags are generally easier to handle and stockpile. However, sandbag filling operations can generally be best accomplished at or near the placement site, and tying of the bags would be a waste of valuable time and effort. If the bags are to be pre-filled at a distant location, due consideration must be given to transportation vehicles and placement site access.

The most commonly used bags are untreated burlap sacks available at feed or hardware stores. Empty bags can be stockpiled for emergency use, and will be serviceable for several years, if properly stored. Filled bags of earth material will deteriorate quickly.

Commercial plastic sandbags, made from polypropylene, are also available from SafetyCentral.com. These will store for a long time with minimum care, but are not biodegradable. Thus, they have to be disposed of, or will remain around for a long time. Do not use garbage bags, as they are too slick to stack. Do not use feed sacks, as they are too large to handle. Use bags about 14-18" wide, and 30-36" deep. A heavy bodied or sandy soil is most desirable for filling sandbags, but any usable material at or near the site has definite advantages. Coarse sand could leak out through the weave in the bag. To prevent this, double bag the material. Gravelly or rocky soils are generally poor choices because of their permeability. Sandbag barriers can easily be constructed by two people, as most individuals have the physical capability to carry or drag a sandbag weighing approximately 30 pounds.

Filling sandbags is a two-person operation. Both people should be wearing gloves to protect their hands. One member of the team should place the empty bag between or slightly in front of widespread feet with arms extended. The throat of the bag is folded to form a collar, and held with the hands in a position that will enable the other team member to empty a rounded shovel full of material into the open end.

The person holding the sack should be standing with knees slightly flexed, and head and face as far away from the shovel as possible. The shoveler should carefully release the rounded shovel full of soil into the throat of the bag. Haste in this operation can result in undue spillage and added work. The use of safety goggles and gloves is desirable, and sometimes necessary.

Bags should be filled between one-third (1/3) to one-half (1/2) of their capacity. This keeps the bag from getting too heavy, and permits the bags to be stacked with a good seal. For large scale operations, filling sandbags can be expedited by using bag-holding racks, metal funnels, and power loading equipment. However, the special equipment required is not always available during an emergency.

Woven Polypropylene Sandbags:

Our Woven Polypropylene bags are treated for UV exposure and are an excellent choice when the strongest material is essential for flood control, levee, trench and berm construction and all temporary or permanent protective barriers. When covered from ultra violet exsposure these Polypropylene Sand Bags will last almost indefinitely.

Hemmed top, Flat woven and double sewn seams enhance durability. Our polypropylene bags are available in the following stock sizes (14"W x 24"L Yellow),(18"W x 30"L Yellow)& (26" x 16" Olive Drab) for sandbags, and are also used for feed, grain, grass seed, fertilizer, sugar, beans, rice and coal.

The tight flat weave is designed to hold and maintain a superior seal for flood control and will last longer than burlap bags when uncovered. Sand bags can be tied with the cord provided or filled halfway and flap folded over for maximum jointing for levee placement.

Burlap Sandbags:

Burlap Sandbags have long been used, particularly by the military and local goverments for creating temporary housing: and are an excellent choice to have on hand for emergencies. Walls can be made massive and substantial, they resist all kinds of severe weather even bullets and bombs,ie,(bomb shelters) and they can be erected simply and quickly with readily available resouces. Burlap sandbags are great for temporary protective barriers are very useful for flood and traffic control. The same reasons that make them useful for these applications carry over to creating earthbag housing: Burlap bags were traditionally used for this purpose, Burlap sandbags will eventually rot if not covered or protected for the elements.

Rugged Plastic Sandbags:

Made of rugged and durable plastic, our sand bags can withstand the rigorous demands placed on sand bags. Their innovative peel-and-stick tape strip allows for easy closure without cumbersome ties. Designed with strength and ease-of-use in mind, these poly sandbags provide the solid performance you want with the economy you need.

Filling Sandbags:

Self-service and citizens, must bring their own shovel.

Maximum limit of 25 bags per household will be provided.

Fill sandbags one-half full.

Use sand if readily available, otherwise, use local soil.

Fold top of sandbag down and rest bag on its folded top.

Placing Sandbags:

Take care in stacking sandbags.

Limit placement to three layers, unless a building is used as a backing or sandbags are placed in a pyramid.

Tamp each sandbag into place, completing each layer prior to starting the next layer.

Clear a path between buildings for debris flow.

Lay a plastic sheet in between the building and the bags to control the flow and prevent water from seeping into sliding glass doors.

Removing Sandbags:

Homeowners should empty the material in the bags in their gardens or yards, then throw the bags in the trash.

Before disposing of used sandbags, check for contamination.

Sandbags exposed to contaminated floodwaters may pose an environmental hazard and require special handling. The sand bags that are distributed by the Highway Department are poly bags and can be dried out and reused unless they are contaminated, damaged or falling apart. This would save the citizen time by not having to go to the sandbag site and give them the opportunity to reuse the sandbags. Check your local municipal laws and environmental protection regulations.

It is important to place the bags with the folded top of the bag in the upstream or uphill direction to prevent the bags from opening when water runs by them.

Sandbag Limitations

Sandbags will not seal out water.

Sandbags deteriorate when exposed for several months to continued wetting and drying. If bags are placed too early, they may not be effective when needed. If it is necessary that bags remain durable for a longer time, the addition of cement can increase effective life. Sandbags are basically for low-flow protection (up to two feet). Protection from high flow requires a permanent type of structure.

A sandbag is a sack made of burlap or Woven Polypropylene that is filled with sand or soil and used for such purposes as flood control, military fortification, shielding glass windows in war zones and ballast.

Sandbags may be used during emergencies when rivers threaten to overflood, or a levee or dike is damaged. They may also be used in non-emergency situations (or after an emergency) as a foundation for new levees, or other water-control structures. Sandbags are not always an effective measure in the event of flooding because water will eventually seep through the bags and finer materials like clay may leak out through the seams.

The military uses sandbags for field fortifications, or as a temporary measure to protect civilian structures. Because burlap and sand are inexpensive, large protective barriers can be erected cheaply. The friction created by moving soil or sand grains and multiple tiny air gaps makes sandbags an efficient dissipator of explosive blasts. The dimensions and weight of sandbags used in fortification are carefully calculated so that the bags can be interlocked like brickwork and are not too heavy to lift and move around. They may be laid in excavated defences as revetment, or as free-standing walls above ground where excavations are impractical. As plain burlap sandbags deteriorate fairly quickly, sandbag structures that are meant to remain in place for a long time may be painted with a portland cement slurry to reduce the effects of rot and abrasion. Cotton Ducking sandbags last considerably longer than burlap and are hence preferable for long-term use. However, the vast majority of sandbags used by the US Military and for flood prevention are made of circular woven polypropylene.

Sandbags are also used for disposable ballast in hot air balloons, and as counterweights for movie theatre sets.

Until recently, sandbags have been filled manually, using shovels. Since the 1990s, machine-filling has become more common, which allows the work to be done more quickly and efficiently. SafetyCentral.com now offers a one-man sandbag filling shovel device.
